The first night or ground frost arrives faster than you think! You should have winter protection ready for the sensitive plants in your garden–such as frost protection fleece.

In winter, it’s not just the cold that’s a problem for plants, but also the sun and occasional spring-like warmth. Therefore, good protection against all three extremes is important. Frost protection fleece is a good option.

What is Frost Protection Fleece?

Experts often recommend buying frost protection fleece for plants. You should wrap all plants that are not clearly frost-hardy in it when the weather forecast predicts sub-zero temperatures. Airtight plastic bags and similar materials are not suitable for this purpose.

Many Plants Dry Out in Winter

Outdoor plants need air, but above all, water to survive. The greater danger for plants in winter is often drying out, not the cold. Cold wind, for example, extracts water from plants through evaporation, according to the Garden Academy of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Their experts therefore recommend winter protection fleece for many plants. It is breathable and allows light and water to pass through. At the same time, it insulates plants well against the cold and protects against excessive evaporation on days with ground frost.

Note: Unlike reed mats, which are also often recommended for cold protection, plant fleeces do not disrupt the natural microclimate, according to the Garden Academy.

Unwrap Plants Under Frost Protection Fleece Occasionally

Additionally, to protect the roots, the soil should be covered with leaves. Alternatively, there are cover discs for potted plants available in specialty stores.

Important: If it gets warmer in between, which is especially the case at the beginning of spring, you should remove the insulation or open it for ventilation. Otherwise, it can get too warm for the plants under the frost protection fleece.
