Mounting a house number is often one of the final steps in home construction. However, it may also be replaced after some time. Not everything that appeals is allowed, though.
The house number should be easily readable so that mail or, in an emergency, an ambulance can arrive at the correct address. And, of course, it should be visually appealing. These are likely the most common requirements people have for a house number. However, many are unaware that the placement of a house number must also comply with specific rules. These can vary depending on building regulations. What are they?
What Regulations Apply to House Numbers
Homeowners are legally required to display an appropriate house number. You can’t just choose it yourself; it’s determined by the local municipality. This is regulated by the Building Code in Section 126, Paragraph 3. It also states: “Otherwise, state regulations apply.” Essentially, this means you must adhere to the local building authority’s rules. And these rules can be quite detailed, including:
- Location and height of placement
- Size
- Color
- Design
- Font
- Material
Building regulations for house numbers are far from uniform—each building authority regulates them as deemed appropriate. Some examples: Many municipalities ensure that house numbers are illuminated, which can be quite practical, such as in emergencies. This is stipulated in Hamburg, Berlin, and Brandenburg—but not everywhere.

Elsewhere, it’s prohibited to use lowercase letters, so 7A instead of 7a. This is regulated in Darmstadt, whereas in Halle, only lowercase letters are allowed. And in some places—such as Unterschleißheim—there are very specific requirements according to the house number ordinance of 1976, as confirmed by a spokesperson upon inquiry by myHOMEBOOK: white lettering on a cobalt blue metal sign, 20 by 25 centimeters in size, mounted at a height of about 2.5 meters.
“However, it’s not the main activity of the administration to reprimand creative homeowners who have equipped themselves with alternative house numbers,” adds Annette Eichinger, head of press and public relations. According to the ordinance, there are no sanctions. “We would like to point out that the prescribed house number design ensures the house can be quickly located in an emergency.”

What Happens if the House Number Doesn’t Comply with the Rules?
Municipalities are free to inspect house numbers, which practically doesn’t happen. However, if there are reports from the public, authorities and regulatory offices take action. In case of a violation or administrative offense, a fine may be imposed. In some places, an individual house number that deviates from the regulations is possible with a special permit. However, this may incur a fee.

How to Properly Mount a House Number
First, homeowners should find out which regulations apply. Then, obtain a suitable sign. Often, the numbers come with matching screws and anchors. A level helps ensure everything is straight. Next, pre-drill the holes, insert the anchors, and screw in the screws. With insulation, avoid creating a thermal bridge.
