When dealing with complex walls, it’s often unclear what the architect envisioned during the planning phase. These wall surfaces seem to be unusable. Odett Schumann, an editor at myHOMEBOOK and an interior designer, shares five tips on how to successfully furnish round walls.
A curved wall surface in your own home may look original, but for many, it’s a real challenge when it comes to furnishing and decorating. Any furniture with a rigid, wide back, like a wardrobe or a long sideboard, is unsuitable from the start. Leaving the wall space empty is also not an option—at least not if your home already has limited space. What’s the solution? myHOMEBOOK author and interior designer Odett Schumann shares five tips on how to furnish a home with curved walls.
Round Furniture for Round Walls
Like attracts like! Naturally, round furniture fits best with a round wall. The market is already well-equipped in this area. Not least because it’s the organic lines that currently dominate interior design. Everything is moving towards more naturalness and a flowing form and line language in the room—away from boxy, bulky furniture. From round beds or at least curved headboards to round or oval tables and even curved sofas and armchairs, the furniture market now offers plenty to make furnishing with round walls much easier.
Custom-Made Furniture
If you’re willing to spend a little money on your curved wall, consider hiring a carpenter. They can create furniture tailored to the curvature of your round wall. This way, no space is wasted! Open bookshelves, in particular, look impressive when they curve along the wall.

Alternative: Standalone Furniture
In general, with round walls, it’s advisable to opt for freestanding furniture rather than wall-mounted options. Freestanding cabinets, sideboards, or end tables can be placed a few inches away from the wall. Narrow furniture pieces are particularly suitable for a curved wall. Of course, it also depends on the degree of curvature. If the wall is more elongated and only slightly curved, like a banana, several narrow tall shelves of the same type can be placed side by side. With a little space between each shelf, they “fit” well to the curve of the arch. A ladder shelf is also a good option and adds a decorative touch.

Accessories Are Even Better
What works with furniture also works with accessories. These are usually much less bulky than, say, a cabinet. Accordingly, wall shelves are also a suitable option for a round wall. You can choose small models and stagger them slightly. Mounting them one below the other is also a sensible solution for curved walls, especially if the wall’s curvature is more pronounced.
Hanging elements like a plant hanger are also recommended for challenging wall shapes. Individual baskets attached to a narrow but sturdy suspension not only look stylish but also store various small items. They also encourage you to keep your possessions minimal.

Round Wall, Free Wall
And of course, it can also be an option to leave the curved wall surface completely free. After all, it is a unique feature that large pieces of furniture would only unnecessarily conceal. So why not draw attention to it instead of hiding it? Not many apartments and houses have such an unusual room element. You can use minimalist decorations like individual hanging baskets, a special wall treatment, or a single large plant.
