If you’re planning changes to your home decor, the fear of costs and the necessary time and effort often looms large. But it’s unwarranted! With these six tips, you can transform your bedroom creatively and with minimal effort—using ideas you’re sure to have never seen before!
Bedroom furnishings often look similar in certain ways. Naturally, the bed forms the center of the room, and all other furniture and items are arranged around it. This results in an almost uniform appearance. Here are some tips to make your bedroom look relatively original again.
Tip 1: Asymmetrical Arrangement

Over time, the bedroom can seem dull and not truly authentic. After all, two people with different personalities sleep here. For the sake of personal taste and an original twist in the room, more asymmetry is welcome. You don’t necessarily need a nightstand on both sides of the bed, or at least not the same model. The number of pillows is a matter of comfort and should be decided and placed individually. The same goes for lamps, runners, and the like. But beware: despite all the (new) asymmetry, some things should still be arranged symmetrically to provide a balancing, calming element in the room.

Tip 2: Paint Only One Wall, Not All Walls in the Bedroom
A bit of color can do wonders for a bedroom, making it appear significantly less dreary. You no longer need to paint all four walls; just one is enough. Choosing the area behind the headboard or at the foot of the bed–the opposite wall–can highlight central areas of the bedroom. However, it would be more unique to focus on less typical spots, such as a ceiling paint job or just one wall on either side of the bed. If the dresser has a very prominent place in the room, it might be a promising idea to frame it with a stripe of color.
Tip 3: Position the Bed Differently in the Bedroom

Typically, the bed’s position in a bedroom is predetermined by the placement of electrical outlets. As a result, personal decisions are rarely made, as the guidelines seem clear. Wrong! Even in such cases, there are still alternative placements. With extension cords, you can reclaim some independence regarding bedroom design and simply position the bed differently. If the headboard is oriented toward the center, lying down offers a new perspective, such as a beautiful picture on the wall. Alternatively, the bed can feel particularly cozy when placed along the wall or even in a corner. If the bedroom size allows, the bed can also be positioned freely in the room. While this placement may take some getting used to, it creates a new, unusual room layout that defies the classic sense.
Tip 4: Use Alternative Nightstand Lamps
Over the years, two models of nightstand lamps have become established in bedroom furnishings: the table lamp and the wall lamp. But it’s time to explore new paths. For some time now, small, very low-hanging pendant lamps have been increasingly seen next to the headboard. This not only looks stylish but also extremely casual. Most importantly, this lamp model offers a significant advantage: there is much more space available on the nightstand. For a bit of asymmetry, the lamps can be hung at different heights as needed.

Tip 5: Bring Art into the Bedroom
It’s rare to see art, in the form of paintings, hanging in bedrooms. Perhaps it’s because you can’t show it off to all your guests. But don’t we bring art into our homes for ourselves rather than for visitors? A prominent placement would clearly be the area above the headboard. Traditionally, the picture is then aligned axially in extension of the bed’s center. However, if you want to give the bedroom decor a new twist, you can follow the lines of the bed’s outer edges and place the outer edge of the picture along it. Instead of always being centered, the artwork can then be hung left- or right-aligned.
Tip 6: Padded Headboard
Listening to podcasts, meditations, or reading a book has become a common bedtime routine for many people. Regardless of the method, a bit of comfort is essential. A well-padded headboard, often seen with box spring beds, can provide this. However, these are quite expensive and–despite high comfort–may not necessarily contribute to healthy sleep. A much cheaper and more individual option would be to get creative and make your own padded headboard. On popular DIY platforms, you can find plenty of ideas on how to create your own headboard with large cushions and stylish leather straps, all without much effort.
