Trends come and go, even in the bedroom. Some designs are no longer in demand and have been replaced by more practical or appealing solutions. myHOMEBOOK author and interior designer Odett Schumann provides an overview.
What was recently considered a trend in the bedroom no longer seems to fit the decor this year. Often for good reason! Which trends in 2024 are no longer in vogue in the bedroom? Find out here.
1. Sleeping in Symmetry
Because bedrooms—especially in families—often have a double bed at the center, the rest of the decor frequently aligns with this focal point. Over time, a certain symmetry sneaks into the room design. Even if both people have different ideas and needs for “their” side of the room, they generally end up looking similar. In 2024, the mirroring effect in the bedroom is finally over: Asymmetry is moving in.

Two different nightstands. Why not? A dresser on one side, a clothes rack on the other? No problem. And different color schemes on the walls are allowed on both sides. The key is that it results in a harmonious whole in the room. Then, lived asymmetry becomes a good design element.
2. Uniform Bedroom Furniture
It’s been frowned upon for some time to focus on uniformity in decor. But in 2024, a mix of various types of furniture will definitively set the tone in the bedroom. While it’s often said that monotony is calming, it can also be boring, characterless, and uninspiring. Not to mention, complete furniture series can be pricey, and not every piece in the set may suit your taste or fit the bedroom dimensions.
Thus, the trend toward mixing pieces is on the rise: a new bed here, an old dresser from grandma there, and an original nightstand lamp from the flea market. This look blends different styles. While a complete series makes things easy, it also takes away the chance to furnish your home—from furniture to accessories—with favorite pieces. After all, that’s when it becomes truly personal and varied.
3. Sleeping in White, Beige, or Gray
Bedrooms here are often kept in white, beige, or gray because these combinations are calming and soothing. But with the return of colors last year, these hues are now also part of the bedroom in 2024.
Of course, everything within a certain framework: Ideally, the current Pantone color of the year: Peach Fuzz. A tone that exudes cheerfulness and vitality in the room without being too overwhelming. Other pastel shades are also allowed. Bright or bold splashes of color can also be seen in the bedroom, as long as they don’t dominate the design.
4. Maximum Number of Pillows
In 2024, only as many pillows as needed will be on the bed. Excess is definitely out of place now. What looked cozy, even almost kitschy, a few years ago is now too much.

Even with a significantly smaller selection of pillows, the bedroom can appear cozy. For example, when a successful contrast between pillows, bedding, and bedspread is created. In the end, you’re unnecessarily spending time in the morning arranging them decoratively and in the evening removing them. So why bother? Especially if the former isn’t done neatly, the look quickly becomes chaotic.

5. Bed Without a Headboard
There are still some bedrooms with beds without headboards. Admittedly, the minimalist look has gained massive popularity in recent years. As a result, there have been more beds consisting only of a frame. The common argument against headboards is that they are merely decorative. However, if well-padded, a headboard also serves as a way to sit upright or lean comfortably while reading or watching TV in bed.

If you prefer, you can opt for a large cushion that can be custom-made by an upholsterer or interior decorator and placed on the bed when needed. This way, you can enjoy the comfort of sitting up while reading or watching TV in bed.

6. Table Lamps Next to the Bed
The table lamp has long been a staple next to the bed. However, it often takes up a lot of space on the typically small nightstand, leaving little room for other essentials. So why not opt for other lighting models? Currently, other lighting options are trending, allowing you to store items like an e-reader, glasses, smartphone, or a glass of water on the bedside table during the night.

7. Uniform Look: Bedrooms in Shades of Blue

Walls and textiles are made for patterns–even in the bedroom. Loud, busy designs on bedding, curtains, or walls can have an unwanted effect in a space meant for rest and relaxation.
Instead, monochrome looks are increasingly in demand, creating more clarity when combined with minimalist decor. This trend now seems to be spilling over into the bedroom.
