Stack, hang, squeeze, and curse—these are common reactions to a small bedroom. Many people find themselves frustrated with limited space. myHOMEBOOK offers seven tips to quickly and efficiently create more room.

The bedroom is often the room in your home that offers the least space. At the same time, it is also the room that is not considered a social area of a home and is usually kept private from guests. Not without reason: various items tend to accumulate here that don’t belong. Piles of clothes and small items gather, gradually depriving you of your own comfort. Since the bedroom must also fulfill some functional aspects, it often presents a chaotic appearance in such a small space. However, a symbiosis of function and coziness is possible even in a small bedroom. These seven tips reveal how to achieve it:

Tip 1: Choosing the Bed

Let’s start with the centerpiece: the bed. This alone takes up a lot of space in the room, especially if it’s a double bed. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Even if it reminds you of your time as a student in a dorm or shared apartment, the loft bed is still popular today and remains an adequate solution for efficient home furnishing. The space gained creates entirely new possibilities and relieves the often overcrowded bedroom.

If you’re not entirely comfortable with heights or prefer not to climb a ladder to bed, there are other models to choose from. A daybed or a sofa bed only requires more space during sleep. During the day, they can be easily folded up.

Tip 2: Sleep and Storage Space

A bed drawer can work wonders for storage in a small bedroom

A bed with a drawer is a worthwhile investment for a very small bedroom, even if it admittedly looks a bit bulky. And even if the bed doesn’t have drawers, it’s advisable to make profitable use of the valuable space under the bed. Use it to store clothes you don’t need seasonally or for bedding, storage boxes, or textile containers. There are also beds with headboards that offer a lot of vertical storage space or beds with frames that provide space for decorative items, books, and more.

Tip 3: The Wardrobe Must Fit

Custom furniture in small bedroom
In a small space, custom furniture solutions are needed. With made-to-measure furniture, every inch is used efficiently, leaving more free space

In a small bedroom, furniture that doesn’t really fit quickly becomes noticeable. Since every inch counts, it’s worth investing in custom-made furniture. This way, unfavorable structural conditions like heating pipes, niches, or perhaps sloping ceilings are no obstacle, and available space is not left unused.

In general, when space is limited, it’s helpful to use the height. So if you’re buying a wardrobe, also get a top unit instead of opting for a wider wardrobe model. And just like that, you’ve saved a bit of space in the room.

If possible, avoid having too many large, bulky wardrobes in a small room. It’s better to opt for several modular pieces of furniture, which are usually less cumbersome. How about a dresser or even a tallboy, which is narrower in width but taller? For a more airy look, consider clothes racks, which are also very trendy.

And don’t forget a small nightstand, ideally with a door for more storage space, keeping its contents out of sight.

Tip 4: Create Storage, Use Storage

Marie Kondo method
Japanese organizing consultant Marie Kondo has successfully demonstrated it. When tidying clothes, it’s important to stack them vertically rather than piling them up

To make sensible use of a small room, it’s not enough to pay attention to the exact choice of furniture. Following the motto “Every little bit helps,” it all starts with organization. Japanese organizing consultant Marie Kondo has recently demonstrated with great success how small tricks can bring big order to the wardrobe. Additionally, regularly sort out items, ideally once in spring and once in fall. If you find it difficult to part with things, stock your wardrobe mostly seasonally. Store the winter or summer wardrobe you don’t currently need in the basement or attic.

Tip 5: Goodbye Piles of Clothes

Messy bedroom
Messiness is not advantageous for any room, but in a small bedroom, it can affect the sense of well-being during sleep

Especially in small rooms, external order is necessary. Maintaining it is not easy for everyone. However, to avoid accumulating clothes, use small furniture like a valet stand or a chair. Behind doors, you can attach special hooks for robes and more, significantly reducing chaos. If you have enough space, you can also place the laundry basket in the bedroom. If not, it can be placed in the bathroom.

Tip 6: Cleaner Look

Cleaner look
For a clean look, you need only a few accessories, light natural tones, a handful of textiles, and, of course, order

For a tidy room, avoid overloading it with too many small items and accessories. Numerous pillows and blankets certainly make a bedroom cozier, but having fewer of them doesn’t end the comfort. On the contrary, it feels less overwhelming. You should not completely forgo textiles of this kind, as they are perfect heat retainers in winter.

In a small bedroom, too many styles should not be mixed. It should not be too busy and should appear more homogeneous. Use mainly light colors for a restful bedroom design. Accessories can create contrasts in stronger shades.

Tip 7: Make Small Adjustments

Make small changes
Fewer blankets and pillows on the bed, a wall mirror, and a narrow shelf on the wall would benefit this small bedroom

Ideally, neither a flatscreen, sound system, nor household appliances should be in the bedroom. They are proven to have no particularly good influence on health. So, get rid of them!

If you want a mirror in your bedroom, avoid placing another piece of furniture for it. Wardrobe models with a mirrored door are the simplest option. Alternatively, you can opt for a frameless wall mirror or attach one to the inside of the wardrobe door. A mirror is always a good choice, as it makes the room appear larger.

A small room definitely needs lighting. You usually only use two to three of them regularly. To ensure there’s enough space on the nightstand for glasses, a book, and a glass, opt for a wall lamp next to the bed in a small bedroom.

In general, use the walls in small rooms as well. Wall shelves, hanging cabinets, and the like are perfect for holding decorative items, books, and other smaller objects that would otherwise just lie around the room.
