Quiet Country Life in the Noisy City: Actress Amanda Seyfried Shows How It’s Done and Offers a Glimpse Into Her New York City Apartment
Amanda Seyfried, known from films such as “Mamma Mia” and “Les Misérables,” usually lives with her family on a farm in a rural area of New York state. However, she occasionally needs to be in the city for work–which is why she acquired an apartment in the heart of Manhattan, New York City. There’s room for her, her husband, and their two children. She gave Architectural Digest magazine a glimpse into this special place.
»A Bit of Home, Even When We’re Not
Right at the start, the actress explains that she wasn’t solely responsible for the decor; she once again had help and support from interior designer Sarah Zames. Amanda Seyfried’s wish: everything should feel natural. And that’s exactly what worked. She feels so peaceful in the big city, the actress says in the “AD” video. She feels a bit at home, even though they aren’t.
The actress’s apartment is in a building from 1907, and according to “AD” magazine, it’s even listed in the National Register of Historic Places. This is the official list of cultural landmarks in the United States. During the renovation, the apartment didn’t lose its old charm–especially with the original arched windows and matching shutters. The doors were also designed with arches accordingly.
Every Corner Is Well Utilized
Once through the apartment door, you’re right in the middle of the 37-year-old’s apartment. To create a small entryway, an oak wood board serves as a partition. A mirror and a coat rack are attached to it–next to a few self-painted pictures by her daughter. It’s clear from the start: this isn’t an apartment like many other celebrities’. It’s well-designed, but less opulent, instead much more natural, homely, and personal.
The dining, living room, and kitchen are all in one space. According to Amanda, this makes it much cozier, quite different from her house up north. And since everything is relatively close together, the space needs to be well utilized. In the living room area, there’s a wall unit. Behind it are, among other things, a storage room, toys, and the TV. The doors in front of the TV can be tucked into the wall, so they don’t stick out awkwardly. In the video, the actress laughingly admits that the doors were only closed for the shoot–otherwise, they’re always open, and you can see the TV.
Particularly clever and stylish are the floor-hidden outlets at several spots in the room. They are also among the actress’s favorites–because thanks to their golden casing, they are not only practical but also nice to look at.
»I Love Mixing Antiques with Modern Furniture
Thanks to the arched windows and a skylight, the room is beautifully bright–combined with many wooden furniture and elements, everything feels very homely and harmonious. Amanda Seyfried places particular importance on reusing old furniture, such as the dining table.
It’s from her old apartment, and she will never part with it, says the actress. Because with every stain, a new memory is created. Amanda Seyfried places special value on old things–old is beautiful, she says. And she urges everyone to restore old things if possible. This is our responsibility.
The rug under the living room table and two chairs that have been reupholstered are also from her old apartment. She loves the fact that she can simply reupholster a piece of furniture, and it looks completely different.
Walking down an unusually long hallway leads to the actress’s bedroom–where an old piece of furniture has found a new place: the bed. And she couldn’t part with the rug either.
Enthusiasm for the Bathroom
As down-to-earth as Amanda Seyfried often appears, she seems to be. Many small details in the apartment make the actress almost euphoric because she is so thrilled with them. The bathroom, which is directly adjacent to the bedroom, she calls the best bathroom she has ever owned. It fits well into the color scheme and style elements of the apartment, is rather classic and simple like the rest of the apartment. Retro-design fixtures, a light wood floor, light marble, and pastel-colored subway tiles.
Small but Fine Children’s Room
The children’s room of her now six-year-old daughter is relatively small but attractively furnished. Everything has its place, especially considering it’s not the main residence. Her daughter loves sleeping in the loft bed, says the 37-year-old–and hopefully soon her three-year-old son will too, she adds with a wink.

Toilet Art as Far as the Eye Can See
Unlike perhaps in many other celebrity homes, many personal items are visible in the video. Besides photos or small paintings by her daughter, there’s also a motif that runs throughout the apartment: a toilet.
A ceramic toilet sculpture stands on the shelf in the living room–handmade by her sister in high school. And the motif continues–in almost every room, there’s at least one framed picture featuring a toilet motif. Why this is so, the actress doesn’t reveal, only that she finds it funny.

myHOMEBOOK Editor Katharina Regenthal’s Opinion:
The New York apartment of actress Amanda Seyfried is a dream come true–and just as down-to-earth and natural as she is. I love the colors and color combinations. Light wood, lots of light, and a harmonious color concept. But what I like best are the many small details that make the apartment a home. The pretty doodles by the children, the old dining table with all its stains, photos, and pictures. And especially beautiful: the way the actress presents her home, so full of love and enthusiasm.
