Carpets have long been out of fashion. New design flooring such as laminate or parquet is considered easier to maintain and more practical. But now the carpet is making a comeback. Interior expert and myHOMEBOOK author Daniela Matsuzaki explains why at myHOMEBOOK.
Why Carpeting Is in Demand Again
After years of minimal and cool living trends, people are longing for a cozy place with comfort in their own homes. A soft and cuddly carpet provides a pleasant feeling, especially in the cold seasons. Predominantly in living and sleeping areas, this comfortable flooring is excellent. It scores not only in terms of acoustics but also creates a warm atmosphere.
Warmth, Comfort, Slip Resistance, and Acoustics
Few floors are as soft and warm and feel pleasant underfoot. This not only increases comfort but can also improve the sense of space. In terms of safety, carpeting can be convincing when compared to smooth floors. This cozy flooring provides significantly more grip and thus reduces the risk of slipping. This is especially important in households with children or older people. For acoustics, a carpet is also a benefit. Advantageous in large apartments or multi-family houses where many things happen simultaneously.

Appearance, Feel, and Material
The selection of materials and appearances is quite large today. In the past, there were mostly velour or loop pile, but today there are many modern and different variants. Shaggy and high-pile carpets, for example, are currently very popular. They are characterized by a soft, shiny surface that manufacturers say is well-received by customers. In addition, new colors, patterns, and structures are offered.
Natural carpets such as sisal, wool, or recycled nylon yarns are also popular, but pile and nap are also in the running. High-pile carpets, in particular, are characterized by their soft and cuddly surface, supported by a stable and robust structure.
Living Health and Indoor Climate
Rooms equipped with a carpet have been proven to have lower fine dust pollution than rooms with smooth floors. Carpets are characterized by the fact that less dust is released into the room and remains in the carpet fibers. The bound dust can then be easily removed with a vacuum cleaner. Wool carpets bind dust from the air particularly effectively thanks to their natural fat content, with dirt not settling as strongly as with many synthetic floor coverings.

Stains, Hygiene, and Durability of Carpets
Carpets are pleasant but react sensitively to dirt. Stains penetrate the fabric relatively quickly, and dust and allergens can settle more easily. Therefore, regular vacuuming is a must. A deep cleaning is also recommended to keep the carpet hygienic. For allergy sufferers, a carpet can be problematic–unless you opt for allergy-friendly carpets.
Durability can also suffer over time. If the carpet is laid on heavily used paths in the home, wear can show. Short-pile carpets are often more robust, while high-pile variants are cozy but can fray faster and hold dirt better. Carpeting should generally be replaced after ten years, ideally after five years. Fortunately, this is quite easy to do.
Another important point is moisture: Carpets do not like it at all. Therefore, they are rather unsuitable in bathrooms or kitchens. Carpets can also mold or smell bad.
For stains, it is recommended to use gall soap, carpet powder, or cleaning spray, which should be gently rubbed in and vacuumed after drying. Be careful if it is silk or wool! Here, you should definitely follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. An intensive cleaning can be achieved with a water vacuum cleaner, which then vacuums up the sprayed agent along with the dirt. Such a device can be rented at a hardware store.
Which Rooms Are Suitable for Carpeting
Carpets are particularly useful and offer more coziness in rooms where peace and warmth play an important role. This applies to bedrooms and children’s rooms as well as living rooms and also home office areas or rooms that require acoustic support.
Carpeting is delivered either by the roll or occasionally as tiles. In both cases, installation can be done easily and quickly. However, when cutting, you should have some patience and skill. The covering is usually securely fixed to the substrate with adhesive or tape.
