Living in a walk-through room is a special living situation that you often don’t choose voluntarily. Thanks to clever solutions, this area can nevertheless become your own feel-good living space.

A walk-through room is generally considered to be problematic. Not only is it a room frequented by several people, as its name suggests, but the walk-through room also presents its users with challenges when it comes to furnishing. Originally, this room was not intended as a functional room. The passageway room once served as a reception room and lounge. Today, due to a lack of living space and high rents, it is often forced to be used as an additional room in a shared flat. So what some people see as their own four walls, others use to get to the kitchen. There are a few things to consider when furnishing a walk-through room so that it doesn’t take on the character of a waiting room.

Positioning the Furniture

As the passageway room primarily serves as a passageway for most residents, it has all kinds of door and window frames in the room, which doesn’t make it easy to arrange the furniture sensibly. What’s more, there is usually hardly any room to maneuver, which means that all the furniture is placed in empty spaces or (too) close together due to a lack of variation. To ensure that the walk-through room does not necessarily end up in a static, uninviting ambience, it is important to get creative and sometimes resort to unconventional solutions.

When furnishing a walk-through room, it is important to place individual “barriers” in the room. Thanks to these stoppers, the room gradually loses its uncomfortable passageway character. For example, a piece of furniture such as a free-standing shelf or sofa can be turned at a 90-degree angle with the short side facing the wall in no time at all. As a new room divider, it creates a quiet section of the room. Of course, you still need to consider the walking routes with this position; otherwise, you won’t be doing yourself any favors, because the people who enter the room should be able to leave it again quickly, if possible.

Type of Furniture When Furnishing the Passageway Room

A passageway room usually has short wall sections, so wide furniture is out of place. This is where tall, narrow pieces of furniture, such as a high shelf or highboard, are needed. And instead of a multi-piece furniture series, which you only have to put together in a less charming way, it is advisable to opt for (matching) individual pieces. These have several advantages: valuable space between two door frames does not remain unused, thanks to a single piece of furniture, and is therefore never wasted. The solitary piece of furniture itself is also shown to much better advantage. However, this special section of the room can be used even more effectively with a door superstructure from a carpenter. A shelf or cupboard in this form can frame the respective door partially or completely and also creates plenty of new storage space.

Room-in-Room Solution

An integrated partition wall or sliding door with a separate section provides much more comfort in a walk-through room

Such a solution is achieved, for example, by inserting a plasterboard partition or sliding door. This creates some privacy in a new, separate niche, for example, for the bed. However, if this is already integrated into the sofa bed, the separate area is also suitable as a quiet zone for a home office. And if an extra wall seems too costly or the landlord does not agree to the project, a large, heavy curtain can be used as an alternative. The advantage of this is that the room can be opened up again if necessary. It is also an affordable solution, especially if you are on a budget.

More on the topic

Create a Second Level When Furnishing the Walk-Through Room

Of course, you get even more peace and quiet if you raise the sleeping area directly to a second level. It is not without reason that you often see this solution in shared student rooms. It may be a little challenging to set up and requires several helping hands, but it is a comparatively inexpensive alternative that has many advantages. A loft bed creates the necessary privacy and also more space in a room that is usually difficult to fit into anyway. In addition, the construction of the bed often floats above door and window frames and is therefore relatively free in its design.

“Installing” the Door

Do you really need to get from the passageway room to all the other rooms, or do they possibly have alternative access? If so, it is worth considering installing one of the many doors in the room with a piece of furniture in front of it. At best, this option should only be considered if the passageway room has such a difficult layout and the furniture can hardly be positioned sensibly. After all, if the entire setting loses all of its living character, the decision to close a door is at least one for more comfort and coziness.
