The Design: Playful, Functional, Iconic
The plate initially appears unusual, but that’s precisely its charm. It’s a long, turquoise porcelain object with a central indentation where exactly eleven meatballs can be placed side by side. This design not only looks impressive but also solves a common problem–the rolling away of the meatballs.
Gustaf Westman describes it himself: “I love designing objects for a specific purpose–it gives them a touch of humor and makes them immediately understandable.” He adds, “In Sweden, meatballs represent Christmas, and with this plate, I want to honor that tradition. The design is simple: The meatballs are arranged so that each one is visible, as if they were sitting on little thrones.”

Is the Ikea Collection by Gustaf Westman Worth the Hype?
About the Artist
Gustaf Westman is a Swedish designer known for his mirrored, organic shapes, bold colors, and charismatic everyday objects. His works, such as bulbous plates, wavy mirrors, and sculptural accessories, have gone viral worldwide. In his collaboration with Ikea, he stays true to his style: lots of curves, vibrant colors, and playfulness.
Together with designer Evelina Kroon, Westman forms one of the three style tracks of the new collection. While Ikea itself focuses on traditional aesthetics and Evelina modernizes nostalgic elements, Westman brings a youthful, bold perspective with a clear focus on celebrating on one’s own terms.
What to Expect in the Upcoming Collection
The Meatball Plate is just the beginning. They open new avenues for communal rituals and create spaces where gatherings can be celebrated with humor and style.
According to Ikea, it’s a bold, expressive collection that encourages reinterpreting traditions: more playful, powerful, and personal.
