Sit by the window and let your gaze wander outside. A window seat makes this especially enjoyable. This article explores the different types of window seats and what to consider during installation.
A small seating nook right by the window: For many, this is a little dream that can be easily realized. A window seat doesn’t necessarily have to be considered during construction. It can also be set up later, for example, with appropriately positioned furniture. Window seats are especially beautiful when you have a wide view, such as of nature. But even in the city, such a nook is worthwhile–to watch the hustle and bustle on the streets, to read or listen to music, or simply to daydream.
Overview
Can you retrofit a window seat?
Depending on the conditions, a window seat can sometimes be retrofitted. However, if you enlarge your window, for example, to make it more suitable as a window seat, you may need to obtain a building permit. A larger window changes both the facade’s appearance and the building’s structural integrity. Whether a building permit is actually necessary depends on the specific state.
But structural changes aren’t always necessary to set up a window seat. With cleverly positioned furniture, you can create a so-called visually simulated window seat.

What to consider with a window seat
Whether you plan a window seat during the house construction or set it up later with furniture, there are a few things you should always consider.
Seat Depth
If the window seat serves as a kind of bench at a dining table, with the glass as the backrest, a seat depth of about 16 inches is sufficient. If you’re unsure, you can simply measure the seat depth of existing chairs.
Seat Height
The seat height also depends on how you want to use the window seat. If it is to be a seating area at the dining table, 16 to 20 inches are generally recommended.
Window Size
If you plan the seating nook during construction, you also have the choice of how large it should be. Generally, you can decide based on your preference and how it fits with the rest of the house and furnishings. Fixed-glass windows, which do not obstruct the view, are particularly beautiful and practical.
Safety
If you plan a window seat in advance, it is usually a window without a handle, as it cannot be opened. This is arguably the safest option. If you set up your window nook later, you should consider lockable window handles, especially in households with children.
4 Variations of Beautiful Window Seats
Bay Window
If you have a bay window, you can usually convert it into a window seat. Thanks to the existing nook, all you need is the right seating–and the cozy window seat is ready.
Use Existing Niches
Some rooms have niches that initially don’t serve a purpose. These can be ideal for a window seat. The advantage: You don’t have to create the nook with furniture.
Visually Simulated Window Seat
Visually simulated window seats are variations that use cleverly placed furniture to create the illusion of a window seat. You can sit on a piece of furniture, and a real nook is formed when you place shelves or cabinets on either side.
Create Storage Space
A window seat–whether added later or already planned architecturally–is not only a cozy spot but can also offer plenty of storage space. Pre-planned window seats can be set up so that there is storage space under the seating area. You can also plan a shelf above the window, in addition to the cabinets or shelves on either side. This makes the seating nook truly cozy.
