As autumn begins, so does the heating season. Those with their own fireplace at home need a large amount of firewood at regular intervals. Some buy a whole truckload of wood at the start of autumn, while others purchase it as needed. But what is the price of firewood in the winter of 2026/2027?

Firewood Prices in 2026
The cost of firewood is calculated per cubic meter (SRM). A cubic meter of firewood represents one cubic meter of cut but loosely piled logs. Those who choose beech wood–cut (between 30 and 33 centimeters) and ready for the fireplace–pay between 120 and 135 euros per cubic meter as of September 2026. However, some dealers charge up to 165 euros for the same amount.
By the way: If you don’t mind cutting and processing your own wood, you can also buy it directly from the local forestry office. Depending on the type of wood, prices range from 30 to 90 euros. The costs depend not only on the type of wood but also on whether the wood is purchased as a solid cubic meter (1 cubic meter of wood without air gaps) or as a stacked cubic meter (1 cubic meter of wood, stacked with air gaps between the logs).

How Do Prices Vary Among Wood Types?
Depending on the type of wood chosen, firewood prices can indeed vary. Hardwood and deciduous woods are considered denser types of wood that burn better and are therefore often significantly more expensive than softwoods.
- Hardwood and Deciduous Wood: Beech, ash, birch, or oak
- Softwoods: Pine, spruce
Prices also depend on whether you choose wood that is already ready for the fireplace. This wood is usually already dried, so it burns faster and more easily. Those who opt for the cheaper, undried version must store the firewood themselves beforehand.
- Ready-to-burn beech wood costs between 120 and 135 euros
- Undried beech wood costs between 110 and 115 euros
- Ready-to-burn softwood costs between 75 and 100 euros
- Lightly dried softwood costs between 70 and 80 euros

Why Do Firewood Prices Fluctuate So Much?
It’s not surprising that there are seasonal fluctuations in firewood prices. After all, no one uses the fireplace during the spring and summer months, which is why the demand for firewood decreases every year in spring and summer. However, due to a long winter that kept temperatures cooler into March, wood prices continued to rise until March. Although prices dropped again in the summer, they were still 13.9% higher than in July 2025, according to the Federal Statistical Office.
The hot summer also played a significant role in price development, as the already valuable raw material wood became even scarcer. From June to July 2026 alone, wood prices increased by 0.2 percent. Higher energy costs, as well as expenses for logistics, transport, and personnel, also contributed to the fact that fireplace owners now have to dig much deeper into their pockets.
