Feeding birds is not just a winter tradition but also a “unique opportunity for experiencing nature and environmental education.” That’s according to the German Nature Conservation Association (Nabu). How to Build a Bird Feeding Station from a Can
If you want to build a birdhouse for your garden or balcony, you can use it as an opportunity for upcycling. The DIY experts at the DIY Academy in Cologne show how to turn a tin can into a bird feeding station:
These Materials Are Needed:
- empty, clean metal or tin cans
- plastic lids
- artificial turf fabric
- skewer stick or thin twig
- birdseed
- double-sided tape
- rope for hanging
- super glue
- scissors
- can opener
1. Clean and Open
The can for the future bird feeding station is rinsed clean, and then the second bottom is also removed. Use a can opener that cuts smoothly and doesn’t leave sharp edges. If you don’t have such an opener, continue with an “entrance.”

2. Design the Exterior
Next, cut the turf fabric roughly to the size of the can. Then, apply two strips of double-sided tape to the can, remove the protective film, wrap the fabric around the can, and press it firmly. Any excess fabric can be trimmed with scissors.
Option without fabric: Leave the surface in its original state and just remove the label; afterward, you can paint the can or decorate it with twigs.
Important: Make sure the material is suitable for outdoor use.
3. Fix the Stick and Lid
With the help of the plastic lid, the food stays in the can. Cut off one-third of the plastic lid, apply some super glue to the edge, and attach it to the can, as well as to the second opening. To make it easier for the birds to land, you can also glue a stick or twig under the can. Finally, you just need to thread the rope through the can.

If you want to build a slightly more unusual birdhouse, you can opt to skip the can and use sticks instead.
Where to Hang the Bird Feeding Station and How to Maintain It
To allow the birds to eat in peace, hang the feeding station high in a tree or find a sheltered alternative so that cats or other animals can’t pose a threat to the birds. The Nabu explains what is best to feed on its website.
To ensure the nature experience can take place and you can often observe the pecking birds, choose a spot that is easily visible from, for example, the dining table. Also, check the station up close from time to time: Wet food could mold and should be removed immediately. Wash the can regularly to prevent disease.
