Whether large or small, it seems to be in every home you see on Instagram and similar platforms: the “Panthella” lamp by Louis Poulsen. However, this designer lamp comes with a price. myHOMEBOOK shows how you can create an affordable alternative yourself.
A bit of decor here, a new rug there, and you might even need a new sofa: A beautiful interior can be quite costly. If you also have a taste for designer pieces, it gets really expensive. This has led to a trend on social media: so-called “dupes,” or replicas of expensive designer items, are showcased at much lower prices. The popular lamp model “Panthella” by the Danish lighting manufacturer Louis Poulsen is one such expensive designer piece. myHOMEBOOK presents a DIY designer lamp that is affordable and quick to make.
The “Panthella” by Louis Poulsen
In the 1970s, designer and architect Verner Panton created the “Panthella” for Louis Poulsen. Since then, the lamp has been in continuous production. Its flowing form or mushroom silhouette is particularly striking. The shape was designed because Panton wanted a lamp where both the shade and the base serve as reflectors. It is available in various sizes and countless colors.

Crafting a Designer Lamp on a Budget – Step-by-Step Guide
This DIY designer lamp is also suitable for beginners. All steps are easy and quick to implement. It’s helpful to have a balcony or other outdoor space, as spray paint is used for this DIY—and it should only be applied outdoors. Here’s how it works:
- Since the salad bowl is sprayed from the inside, it must first be covered on the outside with plastic wrap or masking tape. If you’re very confident with spray paint, you can skip this part. However, you should not skip covering the lamp base, as paint can easily get on the cable.
- Next, spray the lamp base and the bowl evenly. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how long the paint needs to dry. By the way, if you choose white paint, you save some work, as the lamp base is already white.
- Once everything is dry, you can remove the wrap. Then, the knob comes into play. It’s best to attach it to the top of the bowl with a hot glue gun.
- Finally, just place the bowl over the lamp base, plug it in—and your affordable designer lamp is ready.
