Twice a year, certain weather phenomena occur that prompt us to consider our plants. In spring and fall, the days are either already or still quite warm and sunny, but the nights are cool and sometimes drop to single digits. How do our plants in the garden or on the balcony handle this? myHOMEBOOK explains how weather fluctuations affect our plants.
Sunshine Promotes Growth – Moisture Aids in Nourishment
If it is moist and cool at night, it positively affects the plants, explains Sandra von Rekowski from the Federal Association of Allotment Gardens in Germany. “The moisture at night nourishes the plants and the soil, while the sun during the day stimulates plant growth.” This combination can lead to healthy and robust plants—especially in vegetable beds.

Caution with Young Plants: Stress from Temperature Changes
Temperature differences can, however, cause stress, especially in young plants. “The nighttime moisture increases the risk of fungal diseases like mildew, for example, in tomatoes or zucchini,” the expert explains. “Good air circulation within the plants, morning watering, and mulching to keep the soil evenly moist are important,” advises von Rekowski. The gardening expert adds that thinning out densely leafed plants can be helpful.
How to Prepare for Temperature Fluctuations
To ensure plants in the bed thrive despite temperature fluctuations, von Rekowski suggests the following points:
- Keep distance: Plant the plants with sufficient space between them so that leaves can dry quickly after moist nights.
- Water in the morning: This ensures that water is available to the plants at the start of the day. Leaves can dry well, reducing fungal infections and similar issues.
- Mulch beds: Avoid bare soil without cover. A layer of mulch ensures that the soil does not dry out immediately in dry weather and maintains the soil temperature.
- Protect young plants: In cases of significant day-night temperature fluctuations, protect sensitive young plants. You can cover them with a light fleece or place them in a sheltered location.
