Vacuuming and mopping the floors are among the regular tasks involved in weekly cleaning. However, if not done correctly, it can ultimately create more work. MyHOMEBOOK explains which mistakes to avoid when cleaning the floor in this article.

Often, it’s the seemingly simplest tasks where significant errors can occur. This might be because one is so confident in their routine that they don’t question it. Although sometimes it’s just minor details that initially seem insignificant, they can accumulate over time and cause substantial damage. One of these tasks is floor cleaning, where mistakes can also happen.

1. Aggressive Cleaning Agents

A strong cleaning agent does not automatically mean the floor will be cleaner. Especially for sensitive floors like oiled solid wood parquet, aggressive cleaning agents are not recommended. They not only remove dirt but also attack the surface. This can lead to damage that is sometimes irreparable. Acidic agents, such as vinegar essence or citric acid, attack natural stone like limestone and marble. Alcohol-based agents should not be used on plastic floors.

To clean the floor without damaging it, mild cleaners are often sufficient. Each material has its own requirements. Accordingly, the cleaning agent should be adjusted.

2. Mopping Too Wet

For mopping the floor, you need a mop, cleaning agent, and water. This allows you to effectively loosen and remove dirt. But beware: Especially with wooden floors, the mop should be well wrung out. Too much moisture harms the wood. The material absorbs the liquid and can swell over time. This is also visible. The wooden planks warp as they need more space due to swelling.

Repairing swollen wooden floors is labor-intensive and often costly if done by a professional. Nevertheless, it is necessary because, in the worst case, the floor can even start to mold.

3. It’s All About Technique

Stronger, harder, further—please don’t! When mopping floors, hard scrubbing is not appropriate. Incorrect mopping techniques can lead to dirt being worked into the floor. Especially with textured floors, you rub the dirt in instead of removing it. It’s better to use light pressure in the direction of the wood grain.

It’s all about the technique. Another mistake is mopping the floor in circles. This way, you spread the dirt on the floor and may leave unsightly streaks. Better: mop in straight lines. Start in the farthest corner of the room and work your way to the door. Rinse the mop regularly and change the mop water if necessary.

4. Hot Water

Sometimes it’s the small things that have a big effect. This is the case, for example, with the temperature of the mop water. One might think that warm or hot water is particularly effective for loosening dirt and grime when mopping floors. In fact, this is a mistake, and the floor should be cleaned differently. Cold water is better. It doesn’t evaporate as quickly as warm water, which helps avoid unsightly streaks when mopping.

Bonus: Wearing Shoes Indoors

In this country, most people take off their shoes when entering a home. However, it can happen that you quickly rush through with street shoes, perhaps because you forgot something. The problem here is that you spread dirt and small stones inside. If the dirt is not thoroughly removed, it acts like sandpaper on the floor. Every step and mop movement leaves scratches, which over time result in a dull or matte floor.

To protect the floor in the home, place doormats at the entrance. Additionally, it is worthwhile to vacuum regularly and thoroughly—especially before mopping the floor.
