The Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera) is a popular winter bloomer that brings color into the home during the dark season. Despite its name, it doesn’t come from the desert but from the humid rainforests of Brazil. Its care differs significantly from that of its spiny relatives. myHOMEBOOK plant expert Franka Kruse-Gering explains what to consider when watering the Christmas cactus.
How Much Water Does the Christmas Cactus Need?
The Christmas cactus grows on trees in its native habitat, where it is regularly moistened by mist and rain. It prefers a consistently moist but never wet substrate. The soil should never dry out completely, nor should it become waterlogged. A good time to water is when the top layer of soil is slightly dry.
Watering from Below or Above?
This question concerns many plant enthusiasts. Both methods can work, but watering from below is considered particularly gentle.
When watering from below, the pot is placed in a saucer or shallow dish of water for about ten to fifteen minutes. The soil absorbs the water on its own, and the remaining water is poured off after a short time. This has the advantage of evenly distributing moisture while keeping stems and flowers dry, preventing rot.
Also interesting: Why the Christmas Cactus Might Not Bloom
If you prefer to water from above, proceed with caution. Water should be poured slowly over the soil, not over leaves or stems. It’s important that the pot has a drainage hole to allow excess water to escape. No water should remain in the outer pot, as this can easily lead to root rot.

What Is the Right Water?
A common mistake in caring for the Christmas cactus is using water that is too high in lime. The plant prefers soft, slightly acidic water. Rainwater is best. Stale tap water can also be used if it is not too hard. Alternatively, filtered or boiled and then cooled water can be used. It should always be at room temperature, as cold water can cause root damage.
When and How Often Should You Water the Christmas Cactus?
How often you water depends on the season. During the blooming period from November to January, the soil should always be slightly moist. In the subsequent rest phase from February to March, it’s enough to water sparingly so that the substrate remains only slightly moist. During the growth period from April to August, you can water a bit more and occasionally fertilize. From September, when buds form, the Christmas cactus should be kept evenly moist but not wet.
Note: A good indication of water shortage is when the stems appear slightly limp. The plant then needs some water, but usually recovers quickly.
