When it comes to designing a bedroom, creating a calm, relaxed atmosphere should always be the top priority. In case of doubt, less is always more. An overcrowded or overly decorated bedroom simply leads to poor sleep. That’s why myHOMEBOOK editor and interior designer Odett Schumann offers tips on which unnecessary items should be promptly banished from the bedroom.

6 Things That Don’t Belong in the Bedroom

1. Clutter on the Nightstand

A nightstand quickly becomes a popular spot for all sorts of clutter. Besides essentials like an alarm clock, a glass of water, and a tissue box, you might find a wristwatch, bedtime reading, a smartphone, or a photo of a loved one. None of these items belong on a nightstand; they only create unnecessary chaos in the bedroom. It’s advisable to keep the view simple and tidy.

A bedside lamp doesn’t have to sit on the table just because of its name. Instead, consider a wall or hanging lamp. This creates noticeably more space and tranquility on the small piece of furniture.

2. A Collection of Plants

Avoid having too many plants in the bedroom

Plants are generally allowed. However, too many cacti, succulents, or other small plants on the windowsill can create a messy, cluttered look. When you want to air out the room, the many small pots just get in the way. For a tidy look in the bedroom, it’s better to opt for a large plant, essentially a statement piece. Hanging plants, such as those in a macramé holder or a clay pot, are also visually appealing and minimally disruptive.

3. Overloaded Walls

Keep walls monotone! At first, this might sound like boring monotony. However, a calm look is the best choice, as sleep is best found in a bright, natural environment. Wild patterned wallpapers or loud, vibrant colors on the walls do not contribute to restful sleep. Instead, soothing natural tones like light gray, beige, or mild green can adorn one or all walls.

When it comes to wall decor in the bedroom, unnecessary decorations should be avoided. Painted slogans or wall tattoos might appeal to some, but they don’t promote tranquility. Written life wisdoms above the bed or on the opposite wall tend to stimulate the brain rather than calm the mind’s carousel from the day. If there must be an item or decoration with a personal message, simple objects like a mirror, pictures, or an unadorned souvenir from the last trip are more suitable.

4. A Pile of Pillows

The bed shouldn’t consist only of pillows, instead of providing enough space for sleeping. While it may look aesthetically pleasing, it offers few other advantages. It’s better to remove unnecessary piles of pillows from the bedroom; just two are sufficient: a sleeping pillow and a decorative pillow.

5. Work Items

If you don’t have a home office, sometimes the bedroom has to serve as one. Then, a desk, folders, stacks of books and documents, and various technical equipment suddenly move into the room that is supposed to provide peace. These items not only create unnecessary clutter but also take up space in the bedroom.

6. Too Much Decoration

Avoid unnecessary decorative items in your bedroom and limit them to a minimum. Everyday items should not find their way here either–such as dishes. The coffee cup might quickly make its way into the bedroom during a morning glance in the closet and then be forgotten there. Add to that the plate on the nightstand from an evening snack, and kitchen utensils gradually migrate to the wrong room.
