First angular, then round, now wavy: Current furniture designs are making a splash with pronounced curves. The wave design is back and is currently causing a stir in living spaces. MyHOMEBOOK author and interior designer Odett Schumann explains which furniture and accessories best suit the wave form and how this trend came about.

We’ll spare you any wave-related puns here. Either way, it’s more than obvious that shapes in living spaces have been twisting and bending for some time now. Round side tables meet crescent-shaped sofas, and rugs take on arbitrary organic forms. This trend is now getting an update: Currently, designs with plenty of curves are defining modern furniture and accessories. The new (German) wave seems to be back; there’s no other way to explain the wave shape as a current interior trend.

Waves from Taper Candles to Sofas

A popular designer light shows the way: The Vertigo model by Petite Friture became famous worldwide thanks to its distinctive wave shape.

The new wave shape in interior design seems somewhat familiar. Not without reason: The Italian Memphis Group of the 1980s was already enthusiastic about expressive, unconventional shapes and patterns. These included, among others, squiggle lines, zigzag designs, and the wave shape. Now their time has come again. Thus, the sofa with a sinuous backrest and the coffee table with an organically shaped tabletop form a harmonious duo in the living room.

Rugs can also carry the trendy wave pattern well. And decorative objects suit the curvy style: Vases in wave shapes or twisted taper candles almost appear sculptural. Yet one object embodies the new interior trend of wave shapes like no other: the large wall mirror.

The Wave Mirror as a Special Highlight

Currently, the wave mirror, with its uniformly flowing frame, is captivating interior fans worldwide. Some say the wave mirror reminds them of the gentle, soothing waves of water, while others are convinced by the decor object’s retro charm.

The curvy contour of the mirror frame is particularly striking in bold and vibrant colors. Whether in bright red-orange, intense indigo blue, or dreamy sorbet yellow–the wave mirror is becoming the absolute eye-catcher of modern decor.

Why the Wave Shape Is Now Taking Over Living Spaces

Not a classic: Even in abstract form, the wave shape makes a strong impression

With the end of the pandemic, not only did life return to public spaces, but a sense of dynamism also returned to personal living spaces. This came in the form of numerous playful elements: bold colors, geometric shapes, and here and there, whimsical lines have since defined modern interior design.

In particular, the wave shape, as we currently experience it, brings a tremendous amount of energy into the home with its flowing effect. After all, waves also remind us of the power and dynamism of nature. At the same time, waves exude plenty of calm with their consistently even and geometric sequence.
